A ROSE AMONG THORNS
a novel by Ed Schwartz, Founder & President, LSM
Has it ever happened to you? Either at a place you’d expect, like during a seminar or in church. Or in a place you least expect—waiting in an airport, sitting in a coffee shop, in line at the grocery store.
A story changes your life.
This book could do just that. It contains not just one life-changing story, but five. The stories of Rose, Jesulah, Jean Pierre, Evens, and Joseph. Five “restavek” (child slave) children in Haiti, removed from their homes and forced into a world of domestic servitude. A present-day reality for over 300,000 Haitian children.
But it doesn’t end there.
You’ll learn how these five children lived in the harshest of environments, rising above their loss, abuse, grief, and pain, despite being deprived of even the most basic of essentials. These are stories of hope, love, and mercy. Stories that will make you think, make you feel, and make you want to make a difference.
Before you know it, your life may be changed, too.
THIS IS BIGGER THAN A NOVEL.
In 2010, Zach Bertsch was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer. Knowing he would not survive the disease, he chose to live out the remainder of his life helping raise funds for a Kingdom Purpose. That purpose became known as the CANCER REDEMPTION PROJECT in Haiti.
Since Zach’s passing in June 2013, the Redemption Campus has flourished into a beautiful 10-acre campus that is providing a world of “firsts” for children who needed it most:
• A local church, where Haitian children meet Jesus for the first time
• A quality Haitian school, where many Haitian children receive an
education for the first time
• Six Homes of Hope, which provide a loving Christian family for 72
orphaned, at-risk, and exploited children, who are surrounded by
the love of a mom and dad for the very first time
Zach’s wish was that his vision would continue to grow even after his death.
He prayed that more funds could be raised so additional Homes of Hope could be built; that more lost, lonely, and forgotten children could come to Christ; and that God’s grand vision in Haiti could continue through LSM’s unique Continuum of Care.
The cost of printing and shipping the book has been covered by a generous donor in honor of Zach and his vision. Therefore, all proceeds will go towards building additional Homes of Hope and caring for Haiti’s most vulnerable children.
We are in the process of building a new campus just over the hill from the Redemption Campus – the start of the Redemption West Campus!
This means more homes and more children rescued from their incredibly painful lives, equipped with the tools they need to thrive.
Zach chose to partner with LSM because of our long-term vision for vulnerable children like Rose, Jesulah and the rest of the kids you’ll read about in A Rose Among Thorns. Because of a donor’s generosity who like Zach believes in the long-term vision of LSM in Haiti …
ALL PROCEEDS RAISED FROM THIS BOOK WILL BE DOUBLED UP TO A GRAND TOTAL OF $45,000!
May your heart be touched by the stories in this book. We are seeing God move in incredible ways in the lives of former restaveks and other extremely vulnerable children in Haiti. We hope that this new campus will continue Zach’s vision—and ours—far into future generations, transforming Haiti for Christ!
Help more children like Rose, Jesulah, Jean Pierre, Evens, and Joseph reach their full God-given potential!
Since 100% of the proceeds will provide life-changing opportunities, we are praying you and many others like you will feel moved to give $50, $100 or even $500 or more!
