THIS SUMMER, YOUR GIFT IS DOUBLED
UP TO A TOTAL OF $10,000 AND WE’LL SEND YOU A BOOK BY OUR FOUNDER, ED SCHWARTZ!
by Doug Isch, President of Loving Shepherd Ministries
Imagine a child walking by you on the street staggering to carry a bucket of water. No one even seems to notice them. They are clearly hungry, barefoot and wearing tattered clothes. There are deep scars on their backs and legs from being overworked and beaten. They’ve never had the chance to go to school. They have no one to hold them when they get hurt, or provide a bed for them to sleep in. They have become invisible. Voiceless.
Sadly, many of the children LSM serves have known this reality to one degree or another. Children who were formerly restaveks, or child slaves, have been brought into a loving, stable family where, for the first time, they are able to receive love and healing in a Christian home. We provide trauma healing, child development and personalized education plans so these children can begin to reach their God-given potential.
We don’t take this responsibility lightly. That means understanding the difficult past of a country that openly allows such practices to continue. That’s why I’m proud to introduce a new book written by LSM’s Founder, Ed Schwartz, The Trade Winds. Will you partner with us and help reverse this generational tragedy?
YOUR IMPACT IS DOUBLED WHEN YOU PURCHASE THIS BOOK. EACH GIFT HELPS US END CHILD SLAVERY IN HAITI.
WHY WRITE A NOVEL ABOUT HAITI’S DARK HISTORY?
Ed Schwartz first visited Haiti in 1985 and saw a nation troubled with death, extreme poverty and pain. The more he got to know the men and women (who he now considers good friends) he was struck by their deep faith in God. He wondered, “How could their faith be so strong and hopeful despite the hopelessness surrounding them?”
Over the years, the answer to that question became clearer in his mind: Haitians have been fighting for hope for centuries. It’s in their blood and deeply woven in their country’s culture. Ed knew that their story of struggle was worth telling.
The Trade Winds is a culmination of decades of listening, research and a God-inspired passion for the Haitian people. This historical novel follows the lives of several people from France, as well as Africans who were taken captive as slaves to what is now Haiti. As we read, we learn how their lives collide in an account set in French Saint-Domingue.
SLAVERY STILL EXISTS…
Slavery didn’t end when the Haitian slaves finally rose up and gained independence from France in 1804. Instead, the roots of slavery continue to this day in the form of more than 300,000+ child slaves called restaveks. Restavek means “to stay with” and usually occurs when a family cannot care for their child. They send the child (sometimes as young as 4 or 5 years old) to live with a “wealthier” family where they are forced to work 12 – 14 hour days, suffering extreme abuse and malnutrition.
YOU CAN HELP CHANGE THEIR REALITY
For a donation of any amount, we’ll send you a copy of The Trade Winds as our thanks! All proceeds from The Trade Winds will help former restavek and vulnerable children experience the love of a family!
Recently, an anonymous donor gifted a $10,000 matching grant specifically to help restavek children. That means YOUR GIFT is now DOUBLED.
Will you DOUBLE YOUR IMPACT and help us transform the lives of formerly desperate child slaves? With every donation towards The Trade Winds, we are able to help provide a loving family, trauma healing and educational support to children in the name of Jesus.
