Simple Ways to Meet Big Needs

Simple Ways to Meet Big Needs

(Portions of this post are taken from RELEVANT Magazine, “7 Simple Ways to meet Big Needs” by Lorie Newman.)

Caring for the needy doesn’t have to be overwhelming.

We live in a world with overwhelming humanitarian needs: 3 billion people live on less than $2.50 per day, 1.1 billion people lack access to potable water, 19 million people in America are considered “working poor” and a child dies of hunger every 5 seconds.

With so many needs, where do we even begin? Does helping just one person really matter?

The answer is found in Matthew 25:40, where Jesus says, “Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.”

One really does matter. You can help the needy around you in practical, creative ways. Whether it’s across the street, across the church pew or across the world, all of us have the power to reach just one needy person.

What the World Eats

If you’ve been to one of our Poverty Presentations, you’ll likely have seen these pictures. They’ve floated around online for a while too, and yet every time I see them I’m blown away. The following pictures show what people around the world spend and consume in one week.

Germany: The Melander Family of Bargteheide

Death, Stats, and Reality

Death, Stats, and Reality

“A single death is a tragedy. A million deaths is a statistic.” —Joseph Stalin

He’s right you know. The nation shutters when a child like Trayvon Martin is killed, but somehow we don’t really know too much about what’s going on halfway around the world, where the Lord’s Resistance Army has been lose for 26 years wrecking havoc across central Africa. We’re talking WELL OVER a million deaths, child soldiers, mass rape and genocide.

Do You Trust Me?

Posted by Amber In LSM, News | 1 Comment »

I saw this video today and was blown away by the incredible attitude this man has. His foundation is in the God he has learned to trust amidst great personal struggle. Watch this video and pray with me that others would come to find this same inner peace, no matter what struggles come in life.

Life Giving Water (World Water Day!)

Life Giving Water (World Water Day!)

Today’s World Water Day.

We want to talk about water today because of some very hard realities like this:

Every 15 seconds, a child dies from a water related disease. (These are preventable.) That’s 1.4 million children every year DYING because of lack of access to safe drinking water and sanitation.

International Women’s Day

International Women's Day

Today, we celebrate International Women’s Day.

As I think about the women we serve in Ethiopia, I can only be completely humbled. Too easily, we look at them from a middle-class American view and label these women as tainted, as if they chose their ‘profession’ because they wanted to be there.

Love is a Thread

Love is a Thread

“Love is a thread. Justice is a garment.”The Justice Conference tagline

Think about that for a minute. If love is a thread, and God is love, then this whole ‘garment’ is woven together in love. And God is just. So as love and justice weave together, we have this beautiful tapestry of… God. I don’t know about you, but if God says that He IS something, then I think that’s something I want to be woven into too.

I love that tagline, because the visual of that tapestry of love and justice seems to marry those words in a beautiful image we miss too often. I’ve been thinking about that ever since getting home from Portland last week.

I was at this conference in Portland, OR with a co-worker to scout out some deeper ways LSM can get learn and get involved with people on fire for God’s kingdom. And through some great conversations with people we met, and tremendous theological speakers, I saw a larger glimpse of the Body of Christ coming together to weave a little bit more of the tapestry.

Sometimes, when we look at injustices like sex trafficking, HIV/AIDS, child slavery and extreme poverty, it can look like those broken threads could never be placed together again. But last week, we saw 4500 believers meet to try and rebuild some of those broken threads as we network and encourage each other in the work God’s placed us in.

And I think I can add something to the slogan. See, if love is a thread and justice is the garment, then I think we’ll be clothed in hope if we take on this garment. And hope doesn’t make us ashamed, because the love of God is stronger than that. He’s promised us that His way is easy and his burden is light. I got a wonderful glimpse of how much lighter that burden can be when we come together. I’m excited to see where this will go as we continue to dive deep into God’s ‘garment’ of love and justice.

A Toothbrush & A Pole Barn

A Toothbrush & A Pole Barn

To say that we’ve had a lot going on at our Ranch project in Haiti would seem like a major understatement.

Over the last few weeks, several groups from the states have trekked down to Southern Haiti and spent time working with our Haitian staff, training them to build a structurally sound Pole Barn. Others have used their expertise in helping set up a Tilapia Project as we test income generating projects, all at the Ranch.

Still others have helped with some crop production while others have visited our Home of Hope families in the surrounding area and taught basic dental hygiene to the kids.

As we continue to work with the Haitian church and reach out to the surrounding communities, we’re so thankful for the opportunities to build deeper relationships and long-term generational impact with the families we serve in Haiti.
